Tie the knot is a common expression in English. You might think it has to do with tying knots in something like a rope, but the words don’t always mean what they say. Tie the knot simply means to get married. The expression may come from the ancient Celtic wedding tradition known as handfasting. Two people would tie or fasten their hands together using knots of cloth or rope to symbolize their union. The tradition still exists. A few years ago, I went to a wedding where the bride and groom had cords put around their joined hands to symbolize tying the knot. Here are two examples of tie the knot. They’ve been dating for a long time. When are they going to tie the knot? I tied the knot almost 30 years ago, and we are still happily married!
