Lia:
Did your parents set the bar high for you?

John:
They did. How about your parents for you?

Lia:
Mine did also, my dad in particular.

John:
I think most parents set the bar high for their children.

Lia:
To set the bar high or low are expressions we use in English to show how difficult something is or isn’t to accomplish. It’s a standard or level to meet. To set the bar high means there are high standards, and something is hard to achieve. To set the bar low is the opposite. The standards are low, and something is easy to do. In our conversation our parents set the bar high for us which means they had high expectations for their children. Here is an example of each form of the expression. Set the bar low at first, then amaze your audience with a fantastic performance. I set the bar high for my students. I expect a lot from them.
